The eldest son Jabez CHANT born 06/05/1832 married 19.07.1852 Maria Guppy in Somerset, UK and came to South Australia with Maria in the ship China in 1853. Maria is reported as living next door to the Chants in the 1851 census. It is thought that Elizabeth came out with the children to be with Jabez, his wife and family to begin a new start. Jabez Chant sponsored his mother, siblings, sister-in-law (Thomas's wife Lucy Russ) as well as the parents and brother Edward 16 of his wife Maria Guppy along with the aid of the Government of South Australia.
1851 England Census shows a Jabez Chant born in 1833 at Stoke, Somerset, England with residence at Stoke Sub Hamdon, Somerset.
Jabez married Maria Guppy, daughter of Richard Guppy and Sarah, on 19 Jul 1852 in Yeovil, Somerset, UK.1 (Maria Guppy was born in 1832, christened on 28 Feb 1837 and was buried in 1913.)
