Robert was born the son of Mary Chant approximately 1700 at West Chinnock in Somerset England. He was christened at West Chinnock on the 23rd of September
1700. There is no mention of a father in the West Chinnock Parish Register which would suggest that he was Baseborn (a bastard).
It is unknown if Mary Chant is the same Mary wife of Thomas who bore a son at west Chinnock in 1686. Possibly her maiden name was Chant and therefore there is uncertainty as to any earlier origin for this family line. Nothing is known of Robert's life only that he had married a woman named Cecily possibly around 1721. No Marriage entry has as yet been located so this based solely on the fact their first child was baptised in 1722.
